Thinking about death – our own as well as that of our loved ones – is something most of us go out of our way to avoid. What this means is that we often don’t have these important conversations until we find ourselves in emotionally trying circumstances, or perhaps not all, and are instead left to guess what our loved ones may have wanted.
In contrast, when we prepare in advance, we give both ourselves and our loved ones the gift of time – time to think things through with a clear mind – and clarity, taking the stress of guesswork out of the equation.
When a person is at the end of life and unable to communicate, or after they have died, grieving family members can be left to make decisions based on what they think their loved one wants or would have wanted. To ensure that your healthcare and financial wishes are honoured, and to ease the burden of decision-making on those closest to you, consider advanced care planning.

We offer an extensive e-library of books and audio books about loss and coping with grief. There is no cost to access our collection that includes, among others, resources on spousal, sibling, parent and child loss. Any member of the community is welcome to borrow from it.

We have developed a guidebook to help individuals cope with loss or impending loss. This resource is appropriate for someone who: has received a life-limiting diagnosis; is supporting a family member or friend at the end of life; has lost someone important to them.

Becoming a Hospice Volunteer begins with a 35-hour course, which provides adult learners with a basic introduction to Hospice Palliative Care. It provides the knowledge and skills necessary to work with individuals impacted by a serious, life-limiting illness or anyone grieving a loss of a loved one.
This course is experiential and requires participants to share on a personal level. Applicants must be at least 21 years old. There is a $125 fee to participate in the training.
We provide a package of materials for people who are recently bereaved. These packages are available through hospices, hospitals and Home Health.
Packages can also be mailed upon request.
