Expressive arts therapy utilizes the creative process as a therapeutic tool to promote healing. Because the focus is on the creative process rather than the finished product, a background or training in the arts is not required.
At times, it can be difficult to talk to family and friends – they may be struggling with their own grief or simply not know how best to support us. Our specially trained bereavement volunteers have an understanding of the grieving process and know how to listen. They will companion you through the many ups and downs of the bereavement journey. Support is available by phone, online or in person.
Grief support groups are offered throughout the year. These groups, managed by Burnaby Hospice Society staff, provide a safe and non-judgmental environment in which to connect with others who are going through a similar experience. You will learn from and support each other, all while strengthening your capacity to cope with the challenges of grief.
We also regularly run focused workshops and activity-based groups designed to promote learning and connection.
Led by trained bereavement volunteers, our walking groups are designed to provide informal grief support, comfort and companionship.
Groups meet once a week, rain or shine, and walk for about an hour. Pre-registration is required.
Remembrance ceremonies are an opportunity to come together as a community as we reflect on and honour the memories of our loved ones. Events vary, but can incorporate music, poetry and candle-lighting.
