On the first Sunday of May, we hold Hike for Hospice—an annual community walk and our most important fundraiser of the year.
It’s a simple event: people gather at Central Park to walk a short route together. Some come to remember someone they’ve lost. Others walk to show their support for people going through grief or receiving end-of-life care. The money raised helps keep our programs running—free counselling, volunteer visits, and palliative support for people in Burnaby.
For Lina Thomson, this event has personal meaning.
“I was first introduced to Burnaby Hospice in 2016 when my beloved Zia Antoinetta was transferred to St. Michael's from Burnaby General. It was our family's first exposure to hospice care, and I was deeply moved by the level of compassion and professionalism shown by the staff and volunteers. The Burnaby Hospice Society's support goes beyond just bedside care, offering bereavement support, counselling, and home visits when needed. I wanted to become involved with an organization that not only meant something to me personally but also allowed me to give back to my community.
Burnaby Hospice provides invaluable services at no cost, helping individuals and families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments. It's important for the community to know that these services are available to them during times of vulnerability. Being a part of Burnaby Hospice allows me to help spread this message and ensure others can benefit from the care and support that meant so much to my family.”
Lina walks because she’s seen what a difference hospice support makes. And thanks to people like her, we’ve been able to continue helping families all across Burnaby—at no cost to them.
